5th Grade Activities Update
Important: Update on Grade 5 Activities
We hope this letter finds you and your family doing well during these challenging times. This was not the June we had planned; however, we will not allow this moment to pass without honoring our students and giving them a proper send-off. Over the past several weeks, we have been conducting virtual meetings with the 5th grade teachers, PTA and the 5th grade committee to organize the end-of-year activities and graduation for our students. Through our discussions and ongoing direction and guidance from the Chancellor’s Office we have planned the following events:
Graduation: We are in the process of creating a video graduation. The program mirrors our traditional graduation, which includes speeches, awards, and a video of the students. All aspects of the graduation are pre-recorded, and it will not be a live presentation. On June 24th a link to the video will be made available to all at 9 a.m. on the classroom stream. The video will also be yours to keep as a special memory.
Yearbook Signing: Although we cannot do a traditional signing of yearbooks at this point in time, students will use Flipgrid to record special memories of their time at P.S. 6. Grade 5 teachers have posted the Flipgrid information on their classroom streams. The information is also posted on our school website: www.ps6statenisland.org.
June 24th Drive by Clap-Out from 2-3 p.m.: We will have staff members lined up outside of school to celebrate and recognize our 5th graders from a distance! This is only a drive-by celebration and we have coordinated the event with the NYPD to ensure the adherence to City and State guidelines. The front of the school will be lined with the individual student signs to recognize our graduates. The staff will be lined up on Page Avenue, practicing social distancing to cheer our graduates on! We ask that you drive down Hylan Boulevard and make the right onto Page Avenue. Once on Page Avenue, please continue to drive past the school on the right. At the light on Academy, make the right and loop around. You can exit Academy by either turning right or left. This is only a drive-by celebration. You or your child are not permitted to get out of the car at any time. We must adhere to the guidelines for social distancing at all times. There will be no exchange of any items, such as yearbooks or classroom materials during the drive-by celebration.
Although this wasn’t the June we had planned, we feel that the above activities capture the moment as best we can during these difficult times. Please know it has been extremely challenging to finalize any plans and provide information to you regarding End of Year Celebrations as we are held to the ongoing guidance from the Chancellor's Office. Much of which is still forthcoming during these final days.
Once we return to school, we plan to invite our graduates back to officially receive their awards, say their goodbyes and bring some sort of closure to their school year. Further details to follow.
Please reach out if you have any questions. We wish you and your family good health, and we look forward to celebrating with you in the upcoming weeks.
